Joining a fitness facility for the first time is often the first step in helping you transform your body. Whether you're looking to lose weight, gain muscle or accomplish a little of both, you can find it through cardio machines, free weights, weight machines, and fitness classes. Although some machines will take a little time to figure out, an area in which you should be up to speed right away is gym etiquette. Even if you're a novice, there are a number of rules that are important to follow to ensure you don't stand out for the wrong reasons. Here are five to remember.
Wipe Down Your Machines
It's easy for your machine to get doused in sweat during your workout, and that's fine. When you're done breaking a sweat, however, it's time to clean up after yourself. Look for the nearest bottle of antibacterial wipes and give the machine a thorough once-over. If your gym doesn't provide these, consider bringing some for yourself. This rule is arguably the most important for gym etiquette; no one wants to deal with another member's sweat. If you sweat profusely, consider placing a towel on the machine before you begin using it to save clean-up time.
Keep Your Volume Low
Keeping your volume under control applies to two areas—what comes out of your mouth and what comes out of your headphones. Although that last rep on the squat machine might be tough, resist the urge to excessively groan or grunt. Additionally, keep your music at a reasonable level. There's nothing worse than working out next to someone whose headphones are so loud you can hear everything.
Skip the Selfie
Some gyms outwardly ban the taking of photos, but it's a good practice to avoid this idea either way. Many people are self-conscious about their bodies when they're working out and don't want to find themselves in the background of a photo being shared on social media. If you want to show off your muscles, take the photo once you get home.
Keep Your Eyes to Yourself
The gym isn't a place to hit on people and disturb their workout. It's always proper etiquette to avoid ogling other gym members, regardless of the reason. Even if you're simply in awe of someone's workout intensity or the amount of weight he or she is lifting, don't stare.
Don't Treat the Change Room Like Home
The fitness center's change room is for getting changed before and after your workout—not for spreading out your toiletries, making a mess, and walking around naked. Although you might see people exhibiting these behaviors, put yourself in everyone else's good books by keeping close to your locker, cleaning up after yourself, and being quick when you're getting changed.
